Monona Indigenous Roots Dinner

November 18, 2025

Traditional dishes,  indigenous arts, and a gathering of community.

Gather around the table for an evening of incredible food, rich traditions, and community connection. Share a meal with Ho-Chunk leaders, Monona city officials, and neighbors as we celebrate history, culture, and the future of Indigenous recognition in Monona. Enjoy a multi-course feast inspired by traditional ingredients, the energy of drumming and dance, and stories that connect us all.

Tour the Statue Site: The First Location of the Four Directions Project

Walk the scenic trails of the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, winding through prairie, oak savanna, and across the boardwalk to the tamarack island on the pond. Along the way, visit the future site of Gene Delcourt’s latest wood sculpture honoring the Ho-Chunk people in Monona.

Delcourt, an apprentice of the beloved Monona Ho-Chunk artist Harry Whitehorse, carries forward his mentor’s legacy. As the founder of the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival, his work continues to celebrate Indigenous artistry and cultural preservation.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will go toward commissioning Delcourt to carve this East-facing statue, the first of four in the Four Directions Project. Future fundraisers will support the creation of additional statues facing West, North, and South, with their locations to be determined in the coming years.

Come to the Table

Gather with neighbors at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center to share Ho-Chunk-inspired dishes crafted by The Great Dane in collaboration with Indigenous chefs.

Enjoy drinks in their stunning space featuring vaulted ceilings, a grand antler chandelier, and a floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace. Take in panoramic views through the wall of windows overlooking the prairie, or step onto the balcony to immerse yourself in the fall beauty of the surrounding grounds. Connect with others, share stories, and explore unique silent auction items—with easy mobile bidding at your fingertips.

Celebrate Cultural Revitalization

Experience the transformative power of culture in motion.

Marvel at the artistry of traditional dancers adorned in stunning handmade regalia, and feel the deep, resonant beat of traditional drumming. Hear from Wakšik Woošga students as they share the significance of ceremonial language classes and the profound impact of preserving their heritage.
